Isolated trabecular fatigue fractures in the femoral head.

چکیده
Twenty-seven femoral heads were obtained at operation from patients with osteoarthrosis and two from patients with rheumatoid arthritis. Twenty of the osteoarthrosic and one of the rheumatoid patients were given oxytetracycline for between three and fourteen days immediately before operation. Oxytetracycline is deposited in newly formed bone and fluoresces yellow in ultra-violet light. Seven additional femoral heads were removed at operation following subcapital fracture of the femur. Ten others were obtained after death from patients not having a clinical history of hip disease. Nine of these necropsy specimens (taken from cadavers in the age range thirty-seven to ninety) showed some fibrillation or ulceration of the articular cartilage and the bone was to a varying extent porotic. The remaining specimen (from a cadaver aged twenty) was normal.

Bone Fluoride in Proximal Femur Fractures
Bone fluoride concentration and bone mineral density (BMD) were evaluated in 51 female patients who had undergone hip arthroplasty due to proximal femur fracture. The hip fractures were divided into 42 neck and head fractures and 9 trochanteric fractures. BMD in the contralateral femoral neck and Ward triangle was determined by dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry measurement performed within 7 day...
متن کاملA micro-architectural evaluation of osteoporotic human femoral heads to guide implant placement in proximal femoral fractures
BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE The micro-architecture of bone has been increasingly recognized as an important determinant of bone strength. Successful operative stabilization of fractures depends on bone strength. We evaluated the osseous micro-architecture and strength of the osteoporotic human femoral head. MATERIAL AND METHODS 6 femoral heads, obtained during arthroplasty surgery for femoral neck...
متن کاملAnalysis of trabecular bone microstructure in osteoporotic femoral heads in human patients: in vivo study using multidetector row computed tomography
BACKGROUND Lag screw position is very important in the treatment of intertrochanteric femoral fracture to prevent complications such as screw cut-out. Current studies recommend central or inferior placement of the lag screw on the anteroposterior radiograph, and central placement on the lateral radiographs. These reports are based on radiographic evaluation, but few studies have investigated th...
متن کامل0733 - Fatigue Behavior of Human Vertebral Trabecular Bone
Introduction Over half of the 700,000 vertebral body fractures suffered annually by elderly Americans are unrelated to any single traumatic event (1) and the precise mechanisms of the fracture are not well understood. One possibility is that the fracture is due to a series of isolated, relatively high overloads (2); another is that it is due to lower level, more highly repetitive loads (3,4). I...
متن کاملPreoperative QCT assessment of femoral head for assessment of femoral head bone loss
We quantified differences in trabecular volumetric bone mineral density (BMD) of the femoral head between patients with proximal femoral fractures and healthy subjects in the control group by using quantitative computed tomography (QCT) with the purpose of providing guidance for the choice of head screw in the intramedullary nail fixation. Participants suffering from intertrochanteric fractures...
